Davide ha la Sindrome di Down, Gianluca lo stesso ed è anche ipovedente, Marta ha un cromosoma in più e Massimo ha la trisomia 21. Tutti giovani che hanno in comune una sola caratteristica e che oggi, 21 marzo, andrebbero celebrati per la giornata mondiale indetta dall’ONU. Davide, Gianluca, Marta e Massimo però oggi non sono soli, con loro ci sono quasi 500 atleti con disabilità intellettive le più varie e ,ogni giorno, c’è anche Special Olympics che intende renderli protagonisti tutti, non certamente per la disabilità cognitiva, che non è altro che la loro condizione di partenza, bensì per le capacità, le attitudini e le potenzialità che maturano e dimostrano attraverso lo sport.
I Giochi Nazionali Invernali Special Olympics, giunti alla XXIX edizione, ora in corso a Bardonecchia-Valsusa fino a venerdì 24 marzo sono un’ottima occasione per farlo, per puntare i riflettori sulle capacità e non sulla disabilità intellettiva.

Sci alpino, sci nordico, corsa con le racchette da neve e snowboard; le discipline sportive in programma offrono importanti opportunità per mettersi in gioco e far valere il Giuramento che ogni atleta Special Olympics recita prima di ogni competizione: “Che io possa vincere, ma se non riuscissi, che io possa tentare con tutte le mie forze”. Tutti gli atleti in Special Olympics conoscono bene il valore della medaglia, ma qui vincere significa prima di tutto terminare la propria gara dando il massimo, il meglio di sè. Tutti devono essere messi nelle condizioni di poter vincere, a prescindere dal grado di abilità. Per questo sono suddivisi in batterie di pari livello nel pre-gara. E proprio il Giuramento dell’atleta Special Olympics e l’accensione del tripode, in occasione della Cerimonia di Apertura a Bardonecchia, in Piazza Valle Stretta hanno decretato ieri sera, nelle parole del Sindaco Francesco Avato, l’inizio ufficiale di questi Giochi del talento e delle potenzialità umane.

Un evento sportivo nazionale che nel 2018, anno del 50esimo anniversario della nascita del Movimento Special Olympics fortemente voluto dalla sua Fondatrice, Eunice Kennedy Shriver, attraverso lo sport unificato, chiama sullo stesso campo di gioco, nella stessa squadra, sulla stessa pista in Valsusa, atleti con e senza disabilità intellettive che giocano insieme per un unico obiettivo: allenare il corpo, ma anche la mente, ad accogliere una prospettiva totalmente inclusiva, scevra da stereotipi e pregiudizi. La pratica sportiva in Special Olympics non è altro che lo strumento ideale per riuscirci. A Bardonecchia sono pronti a testimoniarlo gli atleti partner coinvolti, in questo specifico evento, nello sci nordico e nella corsa con le racchette da neve. Lo sono anche i 500 volontari, i 400 familiari e i 200 tecnici coinvolti, che, non solo qui ma ad ogni evento Special Olympics, ribadiscono di essersi offerti con l’idea di donare il proprio tempo a qualcuno, per aiutarlo e sostenerlo e, invece, puntualmente tornano a casa stupiti di quanto hanno ricevuto in cambio; una ricchezza interiore di inestimabile valore.

Il territorio della Valsusa è stato interamente sensibilizzato; 14 Comuni sono stati coinvolti nel Torch Run che, nei giorni precedenti l’inizio di questi Giochi Nazionali, ha annunciato l’arrivo degli atleti Special Olympics, alcuni dei quali sono stati anche ospiti delle scuole affinchè giovani e giovanissimi avessero l’opportunità di conoscerli di persona, prima di andare a tifare per loro dal bordo pista.

Un evento nazionale sportivo dunque, ma anche e soprattutto culturale ed inclusivo, i XXIX Giochi Nazionali Invernali Special Olympics da oggi e fino a venerdì 24 marzo, metteranno in pista una sana competizione sportiva e una prospettiva nuova da cui guardare le persone con disabilità intellettive, il tutto in un’atmosfera pienamente viva e gioiosa. Un’opportunità, aperta agli addetti ai lavori, per non limitarsi a parlarne in occasione di una ricorrenza, ma di conoscere e riconoscere le potenzialità delle persone con disabilità intellettive ogni giorno, nella quotidianità, da oggi in poi.

L’evento è realizzato grazie al sostegno di Regione Piemonte, Mitsubishi Electric Filiale Italiana e Coca Cola Italia.
