Papa Francesco benedice la fiaccola di Special Olympics
Roma,Giugno 2018 – “Rivolgo uno speciale benvenuto alla delegazione dell’organizzazione Special Olympics in occasione del 50esimo anniversario della sua fondazione. Il mondo dello sport offre una particolare opportunità alle persone di crescere nella reciproca comprensione e amicizia. Io credo affinchè questa fiamma olimpica possa essere un segno di gioia e di speranza nel Signore che concede i doni dell’unità e della pace. Su tutti coloro che sostengono le finalità di Special Olympics volentieri invoco la benedizione di gioia e di pace che Dio vi protegga”.
Il Santo Padre, in occasione dell’Udienza Generale che si è appena conclusa presso l’aula Paolo VI in Vaticano ha acceso e benedetto la torcia di Special Olympics riaffermando l’importanza dello sport nella costruzione di società più fraterne, in cui le persone abbiano tutte la medesima opportunità di crescere coltivando le proprie capacità, nello sport come nella vita.
Come già precedentemente affermato da Papa Francesco, in occasione di un’udienza privata con una delegazione di atleti Special Olympics nell’ottobre scorso, la Santa Sede non manca di sostenere e incoraggiare quelle iniziative, legate al mondo dello sport, che favoriscono il bene delle persone e delle comunità. Lo sport è uno di quei linguaggi universali che supera le differenze culturali, sociali, religiose e fisiche, e riesce ad unire le persone, rendendole partecipi sullo stesso campo di gioco, protagoniste, insieme, di vittorie e sconfitte.
La Torcia benedetta dal Santo Padre farà il suo ingresso, il prossimo 20 luglio, al “Soldier Field” di Chicago per accendere il tripode e celebrare l’anniversario di un Movimento, oggi presente in oltre 170 paesi, che ha visto nella sua fondatrice, Eunice Kennedy Shriver, una pioniera nella lotta per i diritti delle persone con disabilità intellettive. Era il 20 luglio del 1968 quando, presso lo stesso stadio dell’Illinois, un centinaio di atleti, provenienti dal Canada e dagli Stati Uniti, e circa mille spettatori si riunirono per i primi Giochi Internazionali di Special Olympics.
Un impegno, quello di Eunice Kennedy Shriver, partito diversi anni prima e diventato una vera e propria ragione di vita. La disabilità intellettiva di Rosemary, la sorella più piccola, fu tenuta segreta fino a quando la stessa Eunice decise di renderla pubblica. La rabbia e la grande preoccupazione che nutriva nei confronti dei pregiudizi culturali di cui Rosemary era vittima fecero nascere in lei una passione rivoluzionaria che si trasformò in un appello alla mobilitazione. Contattò tutti gli esperti nel campo delle disabilità intellettive, visitò gli istituti dove le persone vivevano, come prigionieri, in condizioni igienico sanitarie precarie; bambini che non interessavano a nessuno, fonte di imbarazzo, dimenticati e tenuti a distanza. Una vergogna talmente forte e diffusa che le famiglie non potevano fare altro che nascondere questi bambini. Eunice Kennedy Shriver cominciò con l’organizzare attività sportive per persone con disabilità intellettiva, nel 1962, nel giardino di casa sua. I partecipanti provenivano proprio da questi istituti e prima d’allora non erano mai stati in una piscina o non avevano mai corso sull’erba di un campo di calcio. Quel benvenuto a casa Shriver era un invito ad unirsi al resto del mondo; lo strumento per riuscirci sarebbe stato il gioco.
Chicago, a distanza di 50 anni, sarà la cornice di un evento sportivo internazionale, la Special Olympics “Unified Football Cup”. Un torneo di calcio a 11 Unificato, attraverso il quale atleti con e senza disabilità intellettiva giocano insieme, nella stessa squadra. Una realtà, quella dello Sport Unificato, che Special Olympics porta avanti con impegno e convinzione, alimentando la speranza di un futuro positivo e fecondo dello sport, perché fa sì che esso diventi una vera occasione di inclusione e di coinvolgimento.
La Unified Football Cup, in programma a Chicago dal 17 al 20 luglio, vedrà la partecipazione di 21 paesi nel mondo. Un torneo femminile, composto da 8 squadre, di calcio a 7 unificato ed uno maschile di calcio a 11 unificato con 16 squadre partecipanti, tra le quali anche l’Italia. La delegazione azzurra è composta da 16 calciatori, selezionati su tutto il territorio nazionale, di cui 9 atleti e 7 partner (atleti senza disabilità intellettive).
Il sorteggio del torneo, articolato in 4 gironi da 4 squadre ognuno, ha collocato l’Italia nel Girone C con la Giamaica, il Giappone e la Nigeria.
